PROPEL to Date

Since joining PROPEL, our 43 active companies:

• Raised over $60 million in capital, grants and loans.
• Had a liquidity event: in December 2010, American BioOptics announced that it sold certain assets to an undisclosed global medical device company.  ABO will continue to develop its other platform technologies.
• Provided over 215 full-time and part-time jobs.
• Received 44 issued U.S. and international patents.
• Filed over 165 provisional and non-provisional patent applications.
• Received more than $400,000 in DCEO matching grants and SBIR/STTR technical assistance grants.

In all, PROPEL has worked with over 65 companies since its launch in 2007.

As of December 2011, a statistical analysis of the 43 active PROPEL companies revealed:

• 90% are medical biotech, 10% are agricultural-industrial biotech or a combination.
• 34% have university-licensed technologies, 55% have company-owned technologies, 11% combined.
• 85% are Chicagoland-based companies, 15% are based outside of Chicago.
• 39% of the entrepreneurs are experienced business people, 30% are long-time scientists, 20% are recent graduates and 11% are other.
